To strengthen the monitoring and quality development functions of the CHE, the organisation also engages in research projects into higher education issues. Relevant issues are identified through activities such as on-going monitoring, or from policy debates that have arisen in the sector, or from requests for advice from the Minister or other relevant stakeholders. The emphasis in this set of activities is the proactive undertaking of relevant projects within a theoretical framework that defines the higher education landscape and the issues within it.

While the majority of research projects are undertaken by the Monitoring and Evaluation directorate, all CHE directorates engage in research related to their specific focus area.
